Kathu

By the early 1800s, the Tlharo inhabited this area, due west of the Tlhaping stronghold at Dithakong.

Kathu lies on the N14 route between Olifantshoek and Kuruman, alongside the Gamagara River, which was named after a chief of the Tlhaping who settled nearby in the 1880s. The extremely rich iron ore deposits (due to geological formations stretching back almost 3 billion years) brought mining activities, and the town of Kathu has grown exponentially. However, at the beginning of the 20th Century it was simply a farm.

Kathu is part of the Gamagara Local Municipality.
