Deben

By the early 1800s, the Tlharo inhabited this area, due west of the Tlhaping stronghold at Dithakong.  One of their outposts was “Deben”, derived from the term “first water” or “the place where water can be found”. This little village lies along the Kuruman River, and has a significant black and coloured population.

Several white families settled there before the Anglo-Boer War. The built the first Dutch Reformed Church north of Griquatown in 1917. Many black and coloured people settled in the “location”, alongside the river.

Deben is part of the Gamagara Local Municipality.
