Griqualand West is a historical region in South Africa’s Northern Cape province, centered around Kimberley, which became famous for the discovery of diamonds in the late 1860s. Originally inhabited by the Griqua people, it was annexed by Britain in 1871 due to diamond rushes, later becoming part of the Cape Colony in 1880.
Extensive limestone plateau, stretching from the Harts River in the east to Kuruman hills in the west, and from the confluence of the Vaal and Orange Rivers in the south (Douglas) to Vryburgn in the north.
