- In Afrikaans or Dutch, "Wonderwerk" means "miracle". Gnabas means "place of the horn (Kora //ma-b), probably related to the white lime formation and steep incline of the Ghaap Plateau (G. S. Nienaber; P. E. Raper, Toponymica Hottentotica, Vol. 2, page 421).
- History
- There is a vast literature on the Wonderwerk cave. Human activity in the cave has been dated to 10 000 years ago (PHR Snyman, Danielskuil: Van Griekwa-buitepos tot dienssentrum, HSRC, 1988, p. 7). After 1915, asbestos was mined on Wonderwerk farm by the Northern Asbestos Company, led by WH Addison (Snyman, p. 70).
