History
The residents of Smauswane were an early separate branch of the baTlhaping. In the mid-1800s, they lived at Dikgatlong on the junction of the Vaal and Harts Rivers (near the modern town of Barkly West). At the end of the 1800s, they moved to Smouswane; and the apartheid government moved them to Ellendale in 1943 (Breutz p. 205).
