Is this Pauwfontein (north-west of Griquatown, near Plaatjiesdam) – alternatively Pauwvlei (north-west of Griquatown), alternatively Pauwbult 32km west of Olifantshoek (unlikely)

History

By the 1870s, the Griqua Kapteyn Niklaas Waterboer claimed ownership of Rietfontein, during the ongoing land disputes caused by colonial expansion (PHR Snyman, Danielskuil: Van Griekwa-buitepos tot dienssentrum, HSRC, 1988, p. 25). However, this was rejected by the new Girqualand West Colonial government.

Historical Ownership

In 1881, the farm Rietfontein was listed as belonging to the Griquas W and E Fortuin (Cape of Good Hope, Return of Farms and Lands granted in Griqualand West, Cape Town 1881, p. 26 ). It was granted by the Griqua Captain, Nicolaas Waterboer.
