History
Conflict between the Griqua and San (bushmen) continued until the mid-1800s. The San resisted the Griquas' capture of valuable fountains and their hunting activities, which reduced the game in the area. They resorted to livestock theft, which brought further Griqua aggression. In 1839, more than 100 San were killed by Andries Waterboer's Griqua in a cave on Nelsonsfontein (PHR Snyman, Danielskuil: Van Griekwa-buitepos tot dienssentrum, HSRC, 1988, p. 18). Nelsonsfontein remained an important farm, and one road from Danielskuil to Kuruman went via Nelsonsfontein (Snyman 1988, p. 50).
