- History
- The Tswana at Maremane belong to the baTlharo group of the Tswana, who live in a large area west and south-west of Kuruman. The present Maremane Reserve was a Tlharo outpost grazing area around 1850, when the baTlharo were ruled by chief Makgolokwe and his son, Toto, who was then living in the Langberg. Andries Waterboer, the Griqua chief at Griquatown, permitted them to reside in his country; the baTlhharo headman in Maremane was then Isaak Thupane. He was also granted the area of Logageng, also called Gatkoppies or Blinkklip, which is now on the outskirts of Postmasburg (PL Breutz, The Tribes of the Districts of Kuruman and Postmasburg, 1963, p. 107) A son of the notable chief Toto (who was captured in the 1897 Tswana rebellion) was Molebane, born about 1875, and he served as headman of the Maremane Reserve after 1900 (PL Breutz, The Tribes of the Districts of Kuruman and Postmasburg, 1963, p. 92). In 1963, Breutz recorded that Kgosithebe Felix Togelo, born 1905, was serving as headman; he was a member of the Roman Catholic Church. The headman's village was Matlhakeng.By the 1960s, extensive manganese mining was taking place in the Reserve. Almost the entire Tswana community of Maremane were removed in the 1970s by the apartheid government, and went to live in the Bophuthatswana homeland, north of Kuruman. This was part of the development of the Lohatlha Military Base north of Postmasburg.
