- History
- The Tswana in Gatlhose Reserve (Khosis) belong to the baTlharo tribe, who live in a large area west and south-west of Kuruman. The first headman, Molete, obtained the country from the Koranna in the middle 1800s; their superior chief was Toto, who was defeated in the 1897 Tswana rebellion in the Langberg (PL Breutz, The Tribes of the Districts of Kuruman and Postmasburg, 1963, p. 98). Molete in fact married a Koranna woman, Babatas. His son was Holele, born about 1850, who succeeded to the headmanship. Holele died during the Langberg Rebellion of 1897. In 1963, the chief was Frank Motsewakgosi Holele, born in 1918; he was a member of the London Missionary Society (PL Breutz, p. 134). Almost the entire Tswana community of Gatlhose were removed in the 1970s by the apartheid government, due to the development of the Lohatlha Military Base north of Postmasburg. The Tswana of Galthose (Khosis) went to live in the Bophuthatswana homeland, north of Kuruman.
