- Between 1861 and 1871, parts of Griqualand West were governed by the Free State Republic. In 1881, the farm Driehoek was owned by JN de Beer (Cape of Good Hope, Return of Farms and Lands granted in Griqualand West, Cape Town 1881, p. 8). This farm had been allocated to him by the Free State Republic. Johannes Nicolaas de Beer (1830–1883) and his brother Diederik Arnoldus de Beer were Orange Free State farmers whose property, the farm Vooruitzicht in the Boshof district, became the site of the famous Kimberley diamond discoveries - where the Big Hole is located (Source: Wikipedia, De Beers).
