- The Kora name, "Gouchanub", means "Griefing Drift", referring to the battle where the Bushmen were totally defeated (GS Nienaber, PE Raper, Toponymica Hottentotica, page ...) In Kora, !gou means "grieve or be sad", while Xanu means "to ward through", i.e. a drift. According to Stow (1905), "Go-koo-lume" means "you showed us no mercy". According to Nienaber and Raper, elderly people in the area were still referring to Douglas as Kuanop or Kwanop, in the 1960s.(G. S. Nienaber; P. E. Raper, Toponymica Hottentotica, vol. page 459).
