Description
Historical records referring to “Kuruman” may in some cases denote the former Kuruman Reserve rather than the present-day town. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, administrative boundaries and terminology differed from current usage.
Toponomy
The town was probably named after the Kuruman River, which was named after a local San leader, Kudumane., which may have meant "small tortoise" (PHR Snyman, Kuruman - Vervloe Pad na Afrika, 1992, p. 14).
