- Location: Province in southern Africa, forms the southern tip of the African continent between the Atlantic and Indian Oceans.
- Motto: Spes Bona (Latin for “Good Hope”).
- Capital: Cape Town (also South Africa’s judicial capital).
- Municipalities: The Western Cape is divided into one metropolitan municipality (City of Cape Town Metropolitan Municipality) and five district municipalities, which are further subdivided into 24 local municipalities.
- Principal languages: Afrikaans 47%, isiXhosa 31%, English 20%.
- Population: 7 212 142.
- Surface area: 129 462 km2.
- Environment: The western boundary is formed by the Atlantic Ocean and the southern boundary by the Indian Ocean. Stretches northwards into the semiarid Karoo plateau, with the western coast extremely dry. Several mountain ranges, with the prominent landmark of Table Mountain that overlooks Cape Town.
- Economy: No extensive mineral resources, with agriculture and fisheries being important industries. Produces almost all of South Africa’s wine. Export trade, especially fruit, table grapes, wine, brandy and canned goods. Well-established industrial and business base, and home to the majority of South Africa’s petroleum companies. International tourist destination.
- Notable features/Interesting information: Characterised by its diverse natural beauty, which includes the Cape Floral Region Protected Areas (UNESCO World Heritage site) and the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. Known for the Cape Winelands. The province, especially Cape Town and surrounding areas, played an important role in South Africa’s colonial history. Home to Robben Island, infamous prison and now a museum (UNESCO World Heritage Site).
- Previous name: The former Cape Province was divided into three provinces, the Western Cape, Eastern Cape, and Northern Cape provinces. The only province that does not incorporate a former homeland. Officially renamed in 1994.
