- Founded: 1826 as a missionary station, then became a military headquarter. Home to one of the oldest post offices in South Africa.
- Name: Previous name: King William’s Town. The KhoiKhoi called the Buffalo River ‘Qonce’.
- Economy: The industry produces soap, candles, sweets, carton, clothing. Houses a large textile mill and tannery. Home to the Amathole Museum, which houses the best collection of African mammal specimens in the world.
