- Location: Township of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality in the Gauteng province; adjoins Johannesburg. South Africa’s largest Black urban complex.
- Founded: 1890s shanty towns sprung up to house the influx of migrants after the discovery of gold in the area. Created in the 1930s as a Black township by the apartheid government. Known for the 1976 Soweto Uprising.
- Name: The name was established in 1963. It is an acronym from South Western Townships.
- Economy: Mostly residential with little industrial development, most residents commute to other parts of Greater Johannesburg for employment. Growing tourism.
