- Location: Seat of the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality in the Gauteng province. Serves as the administrative capital of South Africa, home to the executive branch of government.
- Founded: 1855, named after the Boer statesman Andries Pretorius.
- Name: Colloquially known as the Jacaranda City, after the jacaranda trees that line the streets.
- Economy: An important rail and industrial centre in terms of engineering, food processing, diamond mining. Houses many historical buildings, as well as the head offices of several national government departments and foreign embassies. Known for its large parks and gardens, including the terraced garden of the Union Buildings. Home to the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, South Africa’s largest research organisation, and the Human Sciences Research Council.
