- Location: Seat of the Msunduzi Local Municipality and the uMgungundlovu District Municipality, capital of the KwaZulu-Natal province.
- Founded: 1838, and named after the Boer leaders Piet Retief and Gerrit Maritz. Its Zulu name is uMgungundlovu, meaning ‘Place of the elephant’.
- Name: Colloquially known as the City of Flowers after its azaleas and roses. The city is also home to one of South Africa’s National Botanical Gardens, as well as the butterfly conservation centre Butterflies for Africa.
- Economy: Growing business and industrial centre. Manufactures mostly furniture, foot ware, aluminium ware. Also produces timber and dairy products.
