- Description
- Location: Province in western South Africa on the Atlantic Ocean.
- Motto: Sa ǁa ǃaĩsi 'uĩsi ("We go to a better life" in the Nǀu language of the Nǁnǂe (ǂKhomani) people).
- Capital: Kimberley.
- Municipalities: The Northern Cape has no metropolitan municipalities. Five district municipalities, which are subdivided into 26 local municipalities.
- Principal languages: Afrikaans 57%, Setswana 33%.
- Population: 1 308 734.
- Surface area: 372 889 km2.
- Environment: On the Highveld plateau, with desert in the northwest. Characterised by vast stretched of arid land. Traversed by the Orange River (Gariep River) that forms the southeast and northwest borders. The cold Atlantic Ocean forms the western boundary.
- Economy: Mining is the most important industry, and the province produces almost all of the manganese mined in South Africa. The copper mine at Okiep is one of the oldest mines in the country. Agriculture, especially sheep and cattle raising, as well as the wines, grapes, and raisins produced in the vineyards irrigated by the Orange River (Gariep River) in the north of the province. Some noticeable electrical power generation projects.
- Notable features/Interesting information: South Africa’s largest and most sparsely populated province. Famous for the Namaqualand daisies, the wildflowers that bloom in the spring. Includes the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park that is managed jointly by South Africa and Botswana. In the west lies the Augrabies Falls. Home to the southern hemisphere’s largest astronomical observatory, the Southern African Large Telescope; and one of two sites that hosts the world’s most advanced radio telescope, the Square Kilometre Array radio-telescope (SKA Project).
- Previous name: Incorporates parts of the former homeland Bophuthatswana and the Cape Province. Officially renamed in 1994.
