- Location: Seat of the Sol Plaatje Local Municipality as well as the Frances Baard District Municipality, capital of the Northern Cape province.
- Founded: 1869-71, after the discovery of diamonds. The town was created in 1878. Kimberley Mine, now called the Big Hole (1.5 km/0,9 mile in circumference), competes with the Jagersfontein Mine for the reputation of being the largest hand-dug hole in the world. In 1881 the first stock exchange in Africa was established in Kimberley. On 2 September 1882 in became the first city in the Southern Hemisphere and the second in the world, after Philadelphia (USA), to install electric street lighting.
