- Capital: Bhisho. Its largest city is Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth).
- Municipalities: Two metropolitan municipalities (Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality and Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality) and six district municipalities, which are further subdivided into 31 local municipalities.
- Principal languages: isiXhosa 83%, Afrikaans 10%, English 4%.

- Surface area: 168 966 km2.
- Environment: Range of natural diversity: the forestland of the Wildcoast, the semi-arid Great Karoo, and the southern end of the Drakensberg mountains.

- Previous name: Previously the Xhosa Kingdom. In 1820 the area began to be settled by Europeans from England, Scotland, Ireland. The province was formed out of the previous Xhosa homelands, Transkei and Ciskei, and part of the former Cape Province.
