- description
- In this study of the cyclic aspects in the Welgevonden trilogy by Etienne Leroux, it is evident that (i) the three novels follow in a chronological sequence; (ii) the main theme of individuation is a core in each novel; (iii) the various facets of this theme culminate in the attainment of the goal - Gudenov's experience of the archetype of the Self; (iv) there is a permanent core accentuated by, amongst other things, recurring symbols and motives which appear in each of the novels comprising the trilogy, as well as in certain recurring words (pertaining mainly to the individuation process). In Chapter I the three central symbols in each of the novels, each of which depicts a specific stage in the development of that specific society, was examined. It became apparent that collectivism, with the concomitant loss of importance of the individual; the estrangement of man from his essential religious nature; the assimilation of Good by Evil; and man's futile attempts to prevent anarchy, are carried a step further in each of the novels. Each one portrays a further step in the disintegration of society. In Chapter II the central theme of individuation was studied and its portrayal by the main characters. It was ascertained that the minor characters represent certain archetypes, or attributes of the archetypes. They support the field of reference. The characters in each of the novels have parallels in other characters both in the same and in other novels. Chapter III is a resumé of these findings. The recurrence of the number seven was also discussed in order to show how certain recurring motives and symbols contribute to the cyclic characteristics of this trilogy.
