diamagnetism
A type of magnetism where materials create a weak, negative response to an external magnetic field, i.e., they are repelled by it.
diameter
The distance across a circle, passing through the center from one side to the other.
diatomic
Molecules composed of two atoms, which may be of the same or different elements.
dielectric
An insulating material that doesn’t conduct electricity but can store electric energy when placed in an electric field.
differential
A very small change in a quantity, often used to study how things change continuously.
differentiate
To find the rate at which something changes, usually by using calculus.
differentiate
To identify the differences among things.
diffraction
A wave phenomenon where waves bend around obstacles or spread out after passing through narrow openings.
diffuse
Describes the way light or other waves scatter in many directions rather than reflecting or transmitting in a single, clear path.
diffusion
The process by which particles spread out from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration, moving randomly until they are evenly distributed.
digit
Any single number from 0 to 9.
dimension
A direction or measurement of space, like length, width, and height. Time is also considered a dimension in spacetime.
diode
An electronic component that allows current to flow in only one direction, like a one-way valve for electricity.
dipole (electric)
A pair of equal and opposite electric charges that are separated by a small distance.
dipole (magnetic)
A pair of equal and opposite magnetic poles separated by a small distance.
direction
The line or path along which something moves, points, or faces.
disc
A disc is a flat, round shape like a circle, but includes everything inside it, like a flat, solid plate.
displacement
A vector quantity that describes the shortest straight-line distance and direction from an object's initial position to its final position.
dissipation
The process by which energy (usually mechanical, electrical, or thermal) is lost, spread out, or transformed into less useful forms, often as heat.
distance
The total length between two points, no matter the direction.
diverge
To move or spread apart from a common point or path.
divert
To change the direction of something, like bending or redirecting the path of light, water, or a moving object.
domain
The set of all possible input values for a function or system.
dual
Having two parts, aspects, or functions.
ductile
Material’s ability to stretch or deform without breaking, especially when pulled into a wire, it’s a key property in materials science and physics.
